About

Introduction

My name is Ben Murphy and I am currently active duty Coast Guard. I am in the last year of a 25 year career and will be retiring and making the transition to journalism. As a journalist pursuing environmental stories allows me to connect past careers with future goals.

Career History

As part of my Coast Guard career I was responsible for enforcing environmental laws and treaties. This gives me a unique approach to telling environmental stories and covering news with factual evidence. My career has taught me to be adaptable and work in a multitude of climates and environments.

Education

I graduated from Full Sail University with a bachelors degree in digital cinematography. Within this program I learned all aspects of video production. Currently I am a graduate student at Full Sail University pursuing a degree in New Media Journalism. I am in the process of finishing my PADI scuba certification and my part 107 commercial drone operators license.

Personal Details

I am originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan and my career has taken me all over the world. I am currently residing in Saint Ignace, Michigan and plan on locating further south in the state. I started off as a hobby photographer in 2022 and have been trying to become a professional photographer for a couple of years while working in the Coast Guard. I have a very strong passion for protecting the environment and trying to give a voice to the voiceless and help educate and be an advocate for change.
